“I remember during my first week at Wegmans, my supervisor Madeleine asked me about my husband. I was taken aback. Not because I didn’t want to share my personal life with anyone, but because until that moment I realized no supervisor had ever asked me that before. As a gay person it had been my experience, supervisors thought of my life in more of a “don’t ask, don’t tell” approach. I remember going home thinking, ‘this is off to a great start.’

The one thing I want people to know about the LGBTQ+ community is we are just like everyone else. We are all moms, dads, sisters, and brothers and feeling seen in the same regard as everyone else is the true feeling of inclusivity.”

“Every day, my coworkers do a fantastic job of making sure I feel like I belong. Most notably, when I first transferred to my new store, everyone asked about my pronouns and made sure I felt comfortable expressing myself. It was a warm welcome to an unfamiliar environment.

One thing I hope everyone can come to understand is that everyone in the community is different and unique. Much like how every guitar player has their own way of making music, people of the LGBTQ+ community all express their identities in varying ways that make them feel comfortable. It’s always going to be a learning process whenever you meet somebody new. You must be patient and understand how each unique person interacts in their own way. And once you do, you open the door to meaningful lifelong friendships.”

“I came out when I was 14 years old and started working at Wegmans when I was 15. 22 years later, I have to say, the sense of belonging comes from just fitting in and being myself. Conversations are never uncomfortable, and I have never felt the need to hide myself.

There is still prejudice and strong opinions in our community. People are still afraid to be themselves. For example, the ability to display affection like holding hands in public. Acceptance and/or tolerance goes a long way. All shapes, sizes, colors. No matter race, religion, orientation – see one another as human.”

“There I was—a scared, young pharmacy intern in a new store. All I wanted was to do a great job at work and make a difference helping our communities. But as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I was nervous to express my authentic self in the workplace. My fears quickly washed away when I met David, my preceptor in the pharmacy intern program. The first week I worked with David, he asked thoughtful questions to get to know me on a personal level. And as I opened up about my experiences and challenges I had to overcome, I could see his wheels turning. He was a new father—what if his children grow up to be gay? A topic he often brought up was how he could parent his kids in a way that makes them feel safe being whoever they are. How could he promote openness at home? How could he teach them to recognize diversity in everyone? These were difficult but important conversations. And I’ve been honored to see them translate in how his family views the world.

David helped me see that my uniqueness could be a strength. He created an environment at work where I felt safe being my true self, and gave me a sense of belonging in the workplace.

Twelve years later, I am the one who is proud of him for the example he sets for his children. Raising them with principles of inclusion, respect, and caring. Sharing my stories with them so they see how important it is to treat everyone with kindness, because you never know what someone may be going through.

Today, I am honored to work by David’s side again. As category merchants in Health and Wellness, each day is a joy to call him a friend, and one of my community’s fiercest allies. And if you happen to catch me in my office, I hope you smile seeing the pride flag artwork I proudly display that was painted for me by his daughter.”

“Being a part of the LGBTQ community can be scary at times. Fortunately, as an employee at Wegmans, I can feel at home. Every day, LGBTQ-identifying employees and I walk into our store with an overwhelming sense of acceptance and respect. When I was hired, I was apprehensive about being vocal when it came to my sexuality. As a gay man, I know that acceptance isn’t guaranteed everywhere. However, when I joined my team at my store, I was pleasantly surprised by the inclusive environment. One day, I casually mentioned my boyfriend to one of my Meals 2GO team members who I was not very close with at the time. To my surprise, they responded with genuine interest and acceptance. Instead of awkwardness, I felt embraced, and it was then that I realized I could be true to myself without fear.

Creating a sense of belonging isn’t just about tolerance; it’s about actively embracing diversity and making everyone feel welcome. At Wegmans, I found more than a job; I found a second family who work to empower everyone every day.”
