Named for the D’Amico brothers, Tony and Joe, To-Jo Mushrooms delivers the season’s freshest, most delicious Food You Feel Good About and organic mushrooms to us from their 4th-generation family farm in Avondale, PA.
“Mushrooms are harvested with so much flavor,” says Joe. “The closer you live to where mushrooms are produced, the more flavor, variety, and freshness you’ll be able to experience.” Tony agrees, “We love hearing from our friends and families about spotting our mushrooms at Wegmans. Whether they’re buying a new variety or just commenting on the flavor, it’s always encouraging to hear that all of the hard work is worth it.
Because the D’Amico family is dedicated to energy and water conservation, and sustainable growing methods (for example, they recycle 40,000+ tons of farm by-products annually), we asked them to grow organic mushrooms just for us. “Wegmans has been a pioneer in making organics go mainstream. We felt like we had a true partner because they were so helpful and supportive when we transitioned a dedicated facility and team to organics,” says Joe. By 2014, they had converted an existing farm to a PA Organic Certified facility for growing organic mushrooms. Today, about 80% of all their organic mushroom production is delivered to our stores!
Because mushrooms have a firm, meaty texture and rich, savory flavor, they make a versatile substitute for some of the ground meat in lasagna, chili, or tacos.
